1. Logging as a Tool for Forest Health
In its commitment to support sustainable forest management UKFDC has been engaged in logging operation across various forest landscapes from montane temperate to subtropical, dry and deciduous forests. Logging when regulated and monitored becomes a tool for forest health rather than depletion. These timber operations are also a major source of revenue for the state. In areas where roads are unavailable or seasonally inaccessible transportation through water or aerial ropeways is carried out. So far in the last 25 years, UKFDC has harvested 1.04 crore cubic metre of timber from the forests of Uttarakhand.
2. Sale of Timber Through E-Auction
Uttarakhand Forest Development Corporation through its timber depots ensure scientific storage, proper grading and systematic stacking of timber. E-auctions for timber sale is through the Uttarakhand Van Vikas Nigam Management System (UVMS), which is an integrated digital platform that facilitates end-to-end auction management, bidder registration, lot information, bidding, result declaration and security refunds. The reduced timeliness has enabled participation of registered buyers from across India, strengthening market competitiveness.
3. Channelising Rivers in the Reserve Forests
UKFDC manages the collection and marketing of minor minerals like sand, boulders, and bajri from riverbeds in reserved forest areas. It follows scientific and environmentally responsible methods for river conservation. Radio Frequency Identification Device System (RFID) technology, computerized weigh bridges, and surveillance devices are utilized to ensure a transparent process. The Khanan Management System (KMS) is a digital platform used for generating receipts, payment of royalty, transit fees and tax invoices which provides monitoring and accountability throughout the mineral extraction process.
4. Marketing State's Herbal Produce
UKFDC supports the Uttarakhand Forest Department in sustainable extraction and marketing of medicinal and aromatics plants. The collection and marketing centres at Rishikesh-Bibiwala, Ramnagar, and Tanakpur, provide a platform for herb producers and collectors to access the market and sell at fair prices.
